The only thing I know of like that which actually worked: They cold-cancelled Farscape and the fan outrage was so extreme that they actually made a feature length movie to put closure to the show and get the fans to stop boycotting the network.
I wish that happened with Dark Matter. They cancelled that but they kept teen sex humor Killjoys. Geez. I guess it's about a cynical arithmetic between ratings and expenditures.
