It always amazes me how foolish otherwise intelligent folks are when posting on the internet. The Twitter, Facebook type platforms where real identities are known seem to take down so many people, oblivious to the new realty that what they say there may be held against them. That's why I chose not to do such things ages ago. But if someone does wish to use them, at the very least they should adhere to the simple practice of not saying, or doing anything that would jeopardize your real world life.
In this case I think we had a young man who saw nothing especially problematic about cursing up a storm among his buddies, who went even further down that path, never realizing that they were broadcasting a rather unsavory picture to a scientific community that didn't see it as 'cool'. Just dumb and childish ... maybe he'll learn something.
I don't use twitter or facebook, but it amazes me the type of stuff our HR manager brings to me that people post on there. We even have a "social media policy" that we discuss in their orientation. It isn't just the entry level help either. People with professional licenses and four year degrees are doing it too! What a bunch of idiots.
It cracks me up as lot of managers and HR get excited if applicant has XYZ credential or degree. At this point, it doesn't mean much to me, I've worked with people without HS diplomas that are more intelligent that those with four year degrees. Unfortunately in this day in age, the government mandates you hire certain credentials/licenses/degrees. It's how they funnel money into 'Big Education'.
