They have many times.
They've had guns, knives, bats, etc taken to them. They get run down often.
Nobody has been killed, that I know of, but there have been a few serious incidents with injuries and criminal charges.

They always have mace and a few fit guys around for protection.
They mostly do a good job of deescalation. We should bring them to North America to give our police some training.

That seems to be the normal way in at least some of Russia.
I've seen wide sidewalks here, but much less often, and usually they have bollards or something that will prevent vehicles and/or bicycles.

I like wide sidewalks in high traffic areas. All it requires from a design point of view is a couple spikes or poles.
Spikes are more fun and rewarding.
