This might be an effective way to discredit his opposition.
There are no martyrs (that I'm aware of) in jail right now. So the athletes have to ask for scum-bags to be released, or admit that things are mostly working fine.
Either way, it invalidates their claim to the moral high-ground.

Easy to see where this is headed. They'll take the pardons for themselves or family, etc and still stay in the locker room during the anthem.
