One of the fun things about this play for non-Americans who don't understand football is that this play is right at the end of the game, and time ran out, so as soon as the play is over, the Cal Bears (in blue) would lose, so they have to keep the play going at all costs. The backwards pass (called a lateral) is a legal maneuver that can be done in perpetuity during any play, and so this play could possibly be a legal Rugby play, although I don't understand all the intricacies of the rules, so I may be incorrect.

One of the fun things about this play for Americans who understand football is that band guy who got crushed in the end zone lol

Hahaha, yeah, "The band is out on the field!" is honestly one of the most iconic calls in American sports history. Bands on the field are not standard procedure during the game. :p
