These trade studies found that modifying the existing mobile launcher would cost $54 million, modifying the Space Shuttle Mobile Launcher Platforms would cost $93 million, and constructing a new mobile launch platform would cost $122 million. Ultimately, the agency opted for the lowest-cost option—modifying the Ares mobile launcher—but unfortunately those preliminary cost estimates turned out to be wildly optimistic.

Government in a nutshell. Just like California's high-speed rail project. Every few months it is announced that the project will take a few more months (i.e. nothing has gotten done) and cost a few million dollars more.

The zillion dollar train to nowhere - LOL. NASA is as good as anyone at wasting government money. The sad part is they let these contractors get away with this nonsense. They even encourage it, knowing as they take bids it'll never happen like they plan. Just more of the famous 'swamp' that's taken hold everywhere government.
