As someone's who lived a lot of years at Vandenberg I can attest to the fact that when the atmospheric conditions are just right, some of the most spectacular sights imaginable are seen on night launches. It's rare, but more frequent than one might think. I can easily see how they'd 'unsettle' many. This is why I always take things like UFO reports with a grain of salt. If I hadn't known what it was, there have often been sights in the sky that I've seen that would seem like otherwise unexplained phenomenon.
