I doubt just a VPN is enough to keep those in the know from identifying you.
It's up to the admins to decide on site policy - and if they want to come down hard on alts, I'm not necessarily against that. However, being able to reliably identify alts implies a lot of prying into what you might have assumed was hidden. I would rather they be upfront about the information they're collecting on users and the implications for user privacy.
