“not all communities can celebrate what life was like in 1776,”

Because life in 1776 America was 'great' for anyone?
They should open a history book once in a while. Maybe then they would understand the harmless joke.
It's not about them. Maybe that's the real problem?

“not all communities can celebrate what life was like in 1776,” a time of slavery in America

Please tell me that this is a satire site because the idea was quite appropriate given the concept of the formalizing of the United States, something worth celebrating. Given the venue, the statement wasn't about slavery but freedom. Where are these students learning to be so sensitive to things which aren't offensive?

Well, I guess we can't celebrate the 4th of July now. This principal should be intelligent enough that he could provide the context that every American can celebrate American Revolution. Hell, haven't they heard of Hamilton?
