I can just see the scientist asking his grant buddies what the most useless thing he could research, besides the sex life of random insects, would be.

If you can produce translucent cells for research you can actually easily view cell processes in realtime and begin to understand their mechanisms, this has been a particularly hard area to research especially for undruggable cancers and anything involving cell metabolomics. The current process involves using certain molecular level dyes as a "tag" to view just a faction of these processes, if you could actually see these whole processes it would open up whole new ways to attack all kinds of disease.
