Every fantastic discovery may, in fact, be a disaster. The alternative is riding a blind into a dead-end. We need to know to get mankind out of this endless cycle of build a little destroy a lot. There are too many people competing for dwindling resources.
What if the next big discovery allows us to generate a megawatt of energy from a 9v battery? Allows us to extract more more than we expended to generate it? Or some how counteract gravity?
There're too many possibilities to just stop looking.
