Well, the start of the article certainly exaggerates to suck in readers, but I don't think it really discusses the issue you bring up.
It's just reporting a scientific study: they seem to observe a real, interesting effect that has so-far escaped our attention despite these drugs being so widely used.
I agree that some people will subsequently try to use this as a weak excuse for their actions, but that's just shitty human nature: pretty unrelated to the article or the scientists who are helping to dispel our ignorance on this matter.
