This article came up today, and what caught my eye was the bit towards the end:

One of the only things the panel ended up agreeing on in any substantial majority was the idea of $1,400 direct payments to families earning under $150,000 per year, with additional payments of the same amount per child.

Perhaps things might have gone better if he hadn't tried to do this over Zoom—video chat is a terrible medium for free-form discussion–but 'gibs' being a strong point of agreement is worrisome.

The problem i see there is that families most in need make much less than 150k. Two parents workingat $15 @, hour at 40 hours a week pull in less than 60k between them. This is a paltry amount to supplement the people who literally can not work due to pandemic restrictions. Much less for those trying to raise children in any sort of normality during these times.

Yes, it is not enough. The problem is, it will never be enough. The next $600 won't buy as much stuff as the last $600. And there is nothing behind that money. Government didn't produce a $600 widget, it just made all numbers bigger so we can do less with more.

Now government handouts are not something to be ashamed of like it was 20 years ago. Everyone has a taste of free money, and like a drug you progressively need more and more for the same result.

We've had the welfare state for 50ish years, and now its rising exponentially.
