I was lucky enough to learn this before I was 20. I was working front desk in a motel in the middle of nowhere. The majority of our guests were salesmen. There was one in particular that was well known for being a giant asshole, always talking down to everyone like we were just various piles of shit he had to step in. I absolutely hated the guy.

One week, his wife joined him for a stay. She was very sweet and nice to everyone, except her husband. She verbally whipped him constantly, he appeared half as tall whenever she was near. She treated him 3 times worse than he had ever treated us. It was then that I truly felt sorry for him. He hated himself and therefore could see nothing pleasant in the world.

And how does this alter how one deals with them?

Where does pity come from? Fear or love?

Pity and anger anger are from a disrespect actions. Your not doing yourself any favors by making excuses for the behavior of others.

I wish I could take credit for this. Alas, I am not that clever.
