IDK, maybe there are internal audio cards with the same quality/functionality of audio interfaces, but having something external looks more logical to me. Built in audio is enough to listen to music, use a microphone, but for music.. I saw a video on yt comparing 2 audio interfaces, one was a Behringer and the other I can't recall, starts with A and it's not Arturia. Well, you could notice the difference even watching the YT video.

Thanks for pointing me in that direction. It seems to me like the interface is much more important and a decent audio function on a motherboard will be sufficient enough for my friends needs.

That's what it's looking like. Which is a whole other Avenue of research to go down.
But now I can't help but wonder, what is the modern function of an audio card?
