I think because it has potential to create outrage. Outrage galvanizes people into voting.

Ding ding ding! Only reason it became an issue close to the end of the election. Obviously the conservatives would be against it, right? Gives the progressives yet another -ism or -phobic to use.

It actually kind of backfired though, at least a little bit. I watch or listen to Tucker Carlson most nights for entertainment, and he has had multiple self-identified "radical feminists" on his show in the last few weeks to discuss how identity politics are harming women and girls and their rights as women, "minorities" in fields or just their identity as being female...and he never attacks them and goes with "radical feminists and conservatives actually agree on this issue".

Kind of brilliant for him to reach out to them to try and get RadFems to agree with the conservative side.
