It is like gambling. Giving money to the church gives them the warm and fuzzies. They feel some emotional reward for doing so.
A close friend of mine grew up incredibly poor, and one time their mother inherited something like 40k then proceeded to donate 30k to the church. All while their house needed lots of repairs and they were having a hard time making ends meet. It drove my friend to be quite anti-religious.

My parents have always had a strict philosophy of not giving me any financial support. They have no problem giving $10s of thousands to the churches, though.
