Whenever it rains there are signs put out at the beaches in SoCal to stay out of the ocean

Is that for a danger of bacteria or algae blooms?

India has similar issues because their sewage drains to an ocean channel

I have a hard time believing that socal is comparable to india is the pollutants of that nature.

I by no means think the area is free of that sort of crap. But I just can't see how this is different from any other major coastal city.

It's due to crap coming from the cities. "These indicator bacteria imply the potential presence of microscopic disease-causing organisms originating from human and animal wastes" ... "The most common cause of postings is the dry weather discharge of urban runoff from storm drain systems.".

It's certainly not comparable to India, but permanent postings for high disease causing bacterial levels do exist and it is because of urban runoff caused even during the dry season.

Okay thank you for clarifying that. That does make a lot of sense for a megamatroplis like southern California. But I can't help but wonder how different it is from say the New York coastal area.
