Alright. You're next...

Why the F6F Hellcat?

I do love the Hellcat, but I really like the Corsair more. So, why Hellcat?

Yes the Corsair is very cool, so is the P-38 Lightning. But I think I like the Hellcat because I was watching "Dogfights" on the History Channel and they dubbed it the "Zero Killer." I believe the Hellcat shot down over 5,000 enemy aircraft.

I believe the Hellcat has more confirmed kills than the Corsair - but that's largely because (I think) they didn't learn how to land it on carriers until after the Brits figured it out and, until then, the Marines mostly used them and they used them from island runways.

I think that, had they started and had the same theater to work in, they'd have had a more appreciable kill level.

I also have an undying fondness for the Mosquito.

I love planes.

Also, I got an email telling me that I should post on regular Phuks, instead of just in the guitar sub, more often.

I quite like planes. If you get bored, and haven't seen it, you can use YouTube and pirate "Wings Over Russia" and there's one other documentary series with a name that escapes me. Wings of the Soviet Union, maybe? I dunno... I smoke a lot of pot.

Anyhow, the Hellcat was an awesome plane. It had things like a self-sealing fuel cell, armor for the pilot, and giant rounds. The Zero was pretty much a 1973 Datsun that flew and blew up a bit easier. They were nimble, but couldn't take a punch.

Yea I think you're right about the carrier landing problems with the Corsair. If I remember correctly the landing gear had to be beefed up because of the violent stress put on planes when landing on carriers. It's pretty much a controlled crash.

I miss the days when CNN was decent. They had a really good run in the 90s. BuzzFeed is more credible than they are now.
