It never was about being fair, but yes, you are right that average citizens will recognize this as nonsense. Aligning with this (like with MS-13 gang members) is a good way to alienate moderates.

I feel sad for everyone in this. The transgenders, because no one can rightfully celebrate the win they trained for, the other girls because none of them can believe that they have to compete so unfairly against biological boys. Honestly, if being trans is so important to people with gender dysmorphia, either they have to get a league of their own, or they have to accept that they have an unfair advantage over other competitors and retire from competitive sports. It sucks hard either way.
