Yeah, the hypocrisy is always good. US has meddled in countries elections for years, installed despots, supported terrorists, been at constant war all over the globe, etc. But of course democracy and freedom are the guiding principles...
None of this should be taken as support for Venezuela. Their government does legitimately suck, and these elections probably are illegitimate.

The US is beyond invading countries for oil, but I think they'd invade someone to make sure they don't sell oil to their rivals.
Either way, it was more of a whimsical comment. The US tends to make comments like this right before they get involved in micromanaging foreign governments, even if they don't actually invade.
