Investigation on why the aircraft picked up a signal from the hill revealed the laser designator was emitting signals in a phenomenon known as "atmospheric scatter. " The pilot failed to properly identify the intended target by sight or request an additional description of the target, the investigative team said.
Yeesh, getting too trusting of instrumentation can cause problems in everything - bombs, planes, cars, etc.
