In other news, it looks like I'll never be in space. I'm not big on how the military has become a means for corrupt politicians.

A Space branch wouldn't necessarily be about weaponry. More likely the command and control of all things space related. The USAF already has a Space Command that does this and my guess is that this is very much like when the USAF was created out of the US Army Air Corp. This would also tie in other agencies throughout the government under a single authority (again, a guess).
The USAF Space Command already does have ICBMs under it now, so there will be weapons in all likelihood. But I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be the primary focus.
