Windows 10 LTSC, with a few UI and Control Panel tweaks, is about the same as Windows 7 with the same update schedule and opt out capability. It's faster, leaner, smaller, more stable and less intrusive, has no telemetry or Cortana, no forced software (except the standard windows programs like calc, notepad, IE, and so forth).

You haven't heard of this version of 10 because Microsoft doesn't want you to use it. They literally say that it's only for critical systems where stability and no new user features is desired. Things like air traffic computers, medical computers, and so on. This apparently does not include the consumer who doesn't like fighting with Microsoft over things like settings, what programs they're allowed to use, not having it restart while you're working on something, and so on.

I use Windows 10 LTSC, v.1609 on one of my bench worlstations. It still has an incredibly slow responce to opening a folder on a customers hard drive, so I can manually look for nasty scripts. My other workstation uses Window 7 with 0patch Pro. It's far less annoying.

Windows 10X will fail like all MS's attempt to fend off Chromebooks did, since it initially will only run MS Store apps. Chromebooks can now run Android apps and Linux.

When customers bring in a machine that won't boot, I run Linux Mint or Ubuntu to see if their machines drive is readable. If so, I'll copy the user file folders to a USB hard drive, before proceeding with a repair.

That's not the purpose of 10 or 10 LTSC. The purpose of 10 is to move to a SAaS model of operation so that they can stop making big, epic things and focus on providing crappy business solutions to companies. They don't want to be in the OS business any more. They want framework platform that they can plug things into and it appears to be an OS component. The reason they're moving in this direction is 1. the current CEO is a moron from another country where the business practice is to railroad bad quality everywhere and 2. no one there knows how the heart of windows works any more.

Install Gentoo

Sure, I'll tell my 70 year old mother to get right on that and learn bash, driver installation, getting the latest updates, and a whole new set of software applications.

Telling someone to switch to a completely different environment is not a solution and people need to stop pretending that it is.

But seriously, for a 70-year old grandma, all computers are going to be equally mysterious, and she won't be able to really manage any of them. She probably is better off with a basic Linux machine with a browser, adblocker, and email client setup. At least the machine won't get loaded down with malware.

I have a 70-year old who has no problems using W10 so generising all old people as dimwits tells me your not up to date.

Telling someone to switch

That directly says that they have a working knowledge of how to use a system already.

That wasn't a difficult thing to understand. At all.

ChromeOS: Microsoft Edition

I bet that everything about it will be much slower than a Chromebook using the same hardware. In spite of what some softies say, it is not a complete rewrite of Windows.

I have a windows 10 PC, after say an hour of tuning and tweaking it it's as fast as Linux. Remove the bloteware use a few scripts and it's a good OS.
