Snaps always seemed like a bad idea to me. Developers absoluately do not have a history of patching software or updating libraries in a timely manner, and any type of distribution method that increases the number of humans who have control over the software my computer runs increases the possibility of a malicious actor. Trusted repos or build from source for me.

Th worst thing to me here is they seemed to be available from the gnome software centre. This is supposed to be the place to get get trusted software and one of the cornerstones of security on Linux is, as you said, use the trusted repos. For many modern users, they won't see the difference between trusted repos and the "ubuntu store."
