I picked up this habit from my parents as a way to save money over using a clothes dryer. Problem is back then most houses were a lot leakier than the modern energy efficient houses that have seals, airtight cladding that doesn't breath, double glazed windows , etc. So where before a lot of that moisture could find it's way back outside, now it stays in. Warm air holds more moisture than cold air so if you open doors to other rooms that warm moist air will go out there and hit the cold walls and glass of the other rooms and condense there. If you don't regularly clean and sweep your walls down the combination of dust and water can lead to mould and even without that you might discolouration, water damage and rotting of the internal cladding of your house.
