December 13, 1577: Francis Drake departs from Plymouth, England, with 5 ships and 164 men to go raid Spanish holdings on the Pacific coast of the New World. He returned 3 years later and became the first British explorer to circle the earth.

Sir Francis Drake is also one of a few people who, some have speculated may have penned the works of Shakespeare under a pseudonym. He's also apparently an ancestor of mine.
