With his trademark uncombed hair and ratty clothes, Twain was outrageous even by local standards; his colleagues called him “The Incorrigible” and his foully smoldering pipe “The Remains.” His editorial opinions were witty and insulting and occasionally wild. One insulted fellow threatened to kick him clear across Nevada. Twain replied, “Well, if you think you’ve got enough money to put me over all these toll roads, just start in!”
