[The following is in relation to Alexander Keith McClung, better known as The Black Knight of the South, who was a famous and prodigious duelist in the 19th century.]

After that [winning a duel by shooting a man in the teeth on the first shot at an impressive distance], McClung found it harder to scrape up a challenge. In a hotel, when he used his own knife to cut a piece of butter, another customer snapped his fingers and called, “Waiter, remove the butter, that man stuck his knife in it.” McClung promptly seized up the butter plate and shoved it into the other’s face and called, “Waiter, remove the butter; this man stuck his nose in it.” The buttered man rose furiously to offer a challenge and then, recognizing the big redhead, turned pale and ran away.
