Shortly after he left the White House, Coolidge was called on to fill out a card to accompany the payment of his annual dues to the National Press Club. He filled in his name and address and then, on the line provided for “Occupation,” he wrote “Retired.”

After a moment’s thought, he wrote on the line labeled “Remarks”: “Glad of it.”
