Pliny, the Roman historian who died from volcanic gasses while investigating the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in A.D. 79, wrote, “Upon the coast of Affricke inhabit the Ptoeambati and Ptoemphanae [in what is now Ethiopia]: who have a dog for their king, and him they obey, according to the signs which he maketh by moving the parts of his body, which they take to be his commandments, and religiously they do observe them.”
