In honor of the holiday, here's a food related anecdote! Happy Thanksgiving to our American subscribers!
[For context: Alexander has just received the peaceful surrender of Babylon, and is strolling through the city.]
Alexander was scornfully amused by the statutory regulations – inscribed on a brazen pillar in the palace – for Darius’ breakfast and dinner. These included such items as 100 geese or goslings, 400 bushels of wheaten flour, and a talent’s weight (57.5 lbs) of garlic (Polyaenus 4.3.32). The interpreter perhaps neglected to inform him that this (admittedly extravagant) outlay was for the Great King’s entire palace household and all his retainers.
