[The following takes place as a result of Thomas Mifflin resigning his post as quartermaster general of the Continental Army, as his replacement was staggeringly incompetent and led to a complete breakdown of the supply pipeline while the army was encamped at Valley Forge.]

Washington’s initial response [to the supply breakdown] was to explode in a fury of frustration, peppering his letters to derelict commissary agents with curse words (e.g., “Dam it”). His aides attempted to cast the verbal indiscretions in a positive light. “This is language that His Excellency is by no means accustom’d to use,” they explained to one agent, “and you may judge of the provocation when he is oblig’d to adopt it.”
