In England, when he was awarded an honorary degree at Cambridge University, Roosevelt received a playful tribute – similar to that previously awarded Charles Darwin – when a large teddy bear was dropped from the ceiling. (Eight years before, Roosevelt’s refusal to shoot a bear under what he considered unsportsmanlike conditions inspired an editorial cartoon based on the incident, which in turn inspired a Brooklyn toy-shop owner to create a stuffed “Teddy” bear for children. The toy – which had the real Teddy’s approval – quickly became a phenomenal international success.)
