The men at most encampments, however, saw few women, and missed them. Reporters, passing through, noted that the soldiers had put signs on their tents, a few wry: BLEAK HOUSE, DRUNKARD’S DEN, DICK’S HOTEL, RATTLESNAKE’S HOLE.
Some signs were feisty: YANKEE SMASHERS, THE LIVE TIGERS.
Others sighed for absent femininity: LADY EMILY, CLARA, DIVINE EMMA, GENTLE DOVE.
