Napoleon’s popularity with Parisians was obviously a factor in Sieyès’ decision [of co-conspirators in overthrowing the incompetent French Directory]; at a visit to the Celestins theatre at this time Napoleon sat at the back of the box and placed Duroc at the front, but ‘the call for Bonaparte grew so violent and so unanimous’ that they were forced to swap places, as Napoleon presumably expected would happen.
