Soon after the Trumans moved into the White House, FDR’s grandson, young Johnny Boettinger, arrived to look for some things he had left there when visiting his grandparents. Truman insisted on helping him locate his stuff and the two began making the rounds of the White House closets. When the boy parted the dresses hanging in one of Mrs. Truman’s closets and looked on the floor in the back, he cried: “Her closets are as messy as Grandma’s!”
Truman laughed delightedly, told his wife about it later, and liked to teas her about it whenever she implored him to be neater.
