One afternoon in 1943 Eleanor Roosevelt, the first lady, entertained Bob Hope, Groucho Marx, Jimmy Cagney, and several other Hollywood stars on the White House lawn to thank them for the work they were doing entertaining U.S. troops. As she passed down the line and greeted each of the performers rather formally, she came to comedienne Charlotte Greenwood, famous for her comic dances and for her ability to kick her long legs high over her head.

As Mrs. Roosevelt approached, Greenwood suddenly did one of her big kicks, and Groucho Marx leaned over and told Mrs. Roosevelt, “That’s what you could do, if you just put your mind to it.”

The first lady moved quickly on without comment.
