Interviewers always asked young Lizabeth Scott what her hobby was. She grew annoyed at the question, since at that point she was totally devoted to her career and had no hobby. Shortly after her second film, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946), she was at Schwab’s Drugstore one evening and noticed a whole counter full of glass animals. As she looked at them, she said to herself, “That’s my hobby.”

She asked Mr. Schwab how much he wanted for every animal in the counter. He told her $75. “I’ll take the whole lot of them,” she said.

During her next interview Scott sat back securely. “And what is your hobby?” the interviewer asked in due course.

Lizabeth looked him squarely in the eye and answered, “I collect glass animals.”

Before long people all over the United States were sending her glass animals.
