During a heated argument over continuing the Office of Price Administration (OPA), a World War II agency, Republican Senator Kenneth S. Wherry of Nebraska goaded Democratic Senator Alben Barkley of Kentucky into a high rage and then asked innocently whether Barkley was too mad to yield for one more question.
Red in the face, Barkley stormed, “I’m not mad! I’m not mad! I’m not mad!” and slammed his fist down hard on his desk each time. As the Senate rocked with laughter, Barkley himself finally managed a grin.
