Maybe it's because I haven't watched the other parts, but I don't get it. The board seems incredibly small with not that many provinces. Isn't it too easy to win or lose?

No, not at all. It's actually quite hard to win, in my estimation; although you can lose very quickly in some cases, although you might be able to convince your attackers that you're more useful alive than dead (I've seen it happen; and heard of cases where someone knocked down to a single unit and supply center was able to come back and solo win the game).

Here is what may be a better map showing the number of provinces. I wouldn't say there's a ton, especially to a game like Axis and Allies, but there's enough for the purposes of this game; I suppose that's the best way of putting it.

EDIT: Most games of Diplomacy likely end in a draw between some number of players - although a few have likely lost by then.
