Turkey isn't so bad in 7 Islands. From my armchair, I'd guess that the possibility to send A Smy to Cyprus and follow up with a 2nd fleet to relatively safely grab Crete should make them much more flexible in the early game, rather than to be 100% committed from turn 1 on to be either anti-Austrian or anti-Russian.

I did not see the land connection for Cyprus. That is a bit better than I thought, then.

Just being able to guarantee the second build (Bul and Cyp) is already a huge advantage. Same for England and Italy.

Of course that also leaves A Smy at least 2 turns away to move to Armenia to attack Russia, or even more turns to get to the Balkan to influence events there. It is a good hedge when you trust neither Austria nor Russia, or just want to buy time to get a better idea about their trustworthiness, but it comes at a price.

It's still better than the binary situation of Turkey's opening in vanilla Calhamer, as at least there is a 3rd way.

Aye, I agree. You could also go F Smyrna with a build, and instead of running the army, convoy it in F1902 via Eastern Med to Crete or maybe even the Balkans with another fleet in Aegean.
