I do not currently have the spreadsheets and everything set up, but I will accept pick lists starting at midnight. You have a week to choose picks though, so the actual game will start on Jan 7th. If you submit picks early and they die before then, they won't count.

How To Play

Pick 10 famous people you think will die in 2017. You will get points for one of your picks if they die, based on this formula:

1 point = every year under 100 the pick is when they die.

So for example, if I pick an 80 year old and they die, I will get 20 points, because they are 20 years younger than 100. This also means that if you pick someone who is 100, you will get no points if they die.

Good Strategies

Do not pick 10 really old people. They are more likely to die, but you won't get a lot of points if they do. Pick some old people so you are more likely to get a few points on the board, but have some younger picks too.

Do your research. Try and find out if a famous or notable person has a life threatening disease, or maybe try and find a recent picture of them to assess how close to death they are.

Do not base your picks around people you do not like, just because you want them to die. This is a very common mistake in deathpool. If you want to win, you need to be ruthless. Try to take the emotion out of your selection process.

Rules

You are not allowed to murder a pick or be involved in their death in any way. Breaking this rule will result in immediate disqualification and possible incarceration.

Picking people who are on death row is not allowed. The only exception to this rule is if you pick someone and they are sentenced to death after you have already picked them.

People who are involved in open combat are not allowed to be picked. This rule includes people like notable ISIS leaders.

As a general rule, your pick must have a Wikipedia page to be considered notable enough to be selected. In the event that you find a very obscure Wikipedia page, there will be a discussion amongst players as to whether the pick should be allowed.

Bonus Points

The Amy Winehouse - 25 points

  • Your pick dies due to an overdose. Toxicology report must be released before 31st December for points to count.

The Whitney Houston - 25 points

  • Your black pick dies in February (Black History Month).

The Kurt Cobain - 25 points

  • Pick commits suicide.

First Blood - 25 points

  • You are the first person to get a correct pick. This is only applicable if nobody else had the same pick.

Foul Play - 30 points

  • Something happened to your pick. Either they committed suicide, or they were killed, and there is no way to know which one it was. But something definitely happened to your pick.

The John Lennon - 50 points

  • Your pick is murdered. Again, murdering or having anything to do with the murder of your pick will result in immediate disqualification.

The Lynyrd Skynyrd - 50 points

  • Your pick dies on a flight. This could be a plane, helicopter, space shuttle etc.

The Double - 50 points

  • Two of your picks die on the same day.

The Shakespeare - 75 points

  • Your pick dies on their birthday. Seems unlikely, but Merle Haggard died on his birthday this year.

Last Call - 100 points

  • The holy grail. Your pick dies on New Year's Eve.

Teams

As well as competing on an individual level, players will also be assigned to one of two teams. All player's scores on each team will contribute to the team score. Teams will have the opportunity to pick a captain before the end of March, and his team points will be doubled, but his individual points will remain the same. Think of the team game as a side game to the individual competition. We will need team names.

Good Luck!

I think you need a rule that states you can't get any points until a week after your pics are posted. Otherwise you could create a list when some young cleb is on deaths door, gaining lit's of points. Like picking Tracy Morgan right after the car crash, yes he lived but it was very close.

Does brain dead count as dead?

That's one way of looking at it. I vaguely remember someone bringing this up last year but we decided that those who joined later in the year had the disadvantage of having less time for their picks to die, so it evened out. @Jobes what do you think?

Braindead is alive. They have to stop breathing to be confirmed as a dead pick.

I don't think we need a 1 week rule. There's a chance a fringe pick could suddenly croak right after submitting a pick with no signs of dying soon, and that would be unfair to the player. Sure it would be shitty of someone to submit their picks a few minutes after someone is shot multiple times, but chances are fairly slim of that happening.

I think in the event that something like that happened, we probably shouldn't let them have the points anyway.

Saying that, making picks based on news about people who are critically ill can sometimes backfire. There was a 2-3 week period where a ton of people picked Charlie Sheen because there was a hoax about him being on his deathbed with AIDs.
