This was a ryzen9 with a new board. I had the fear that I didn't remove the cap on the heat sink. Which now I think that waffle pattern was just pre applied thermal paste. Making the extra I applied redundant. But when I pulled it all off to check I damn near threw up and shit my pants simultaneously.

That used to happen all the time on old Socket 478 Pentium 4s, particularly in Dell desktops. You'd have to pry those processors off the heatsinks. Never had an issue with them, though.
