It is a crisis, and should be given top priority. Unfortunately it's something we set in motion now, and pay for later when we can't change it, and we're far too stupid to plan ahead as a species.

No, driving Teslas and putting up wind turbines won't fix the ecological harm we're doing. If anything is likely to lead to a real crisis, it is depletion of the fish stock, plummeting natural biomass, plastic waste, depleting aquifers, and extinction of many species. In the grand scheme of things, 2 degree C is meaningless compared to what we are capable of doing and are doing on an industrial scale with zero work or political will to stop because all the political capital gets spend on divisive shrieking autistic Swedish teenagers to keep the media circus of distraction and disorientation going.

The real crisis is to ecosystem destruction and wasteful consumerism and no politician is working against that because it's easier to distract with lies and fear about global warming. All the fake carbon offsets and electric cars do is let companies greenwash their images, keep consumerism rolling along and growing, create political strife to distract people in culture wars or paralyzing guilt, etc. Meanwhile the private jets keep moving as hollywood celebs fly off to their 4th homes and lecture us on the great work they're doing to save the planet and how they can't believe how stupid anybody is for questioning what they say. See a problem here with this whole approach and why plenty of reasonable people see a bunch of bullshit in all of it?

Of course I agree...

If you read up on climate science, 2 degrees is most likely all we need to screw over civilization. Sure we may collapse before then, largely for other reasons.

Insulting well-meaning little girls is always a sign of a big man.

They're pretty intertwined. There's no effective action on global heating without a ton of downsizing, efficiency, ecosystem preservation/restoration.

There's some of your own culture-war brainwashing mixed in here. I'm more than happy to condemn the rich, but with things as they stand, I don't give a shit if they use private jets, as long as the ends justify the means. You're right that in almost all cases it doesn't. Focusing on individual contributions is a transparent distraction - it's a whole of society problem and needs a whole of society solution. If the solution involves eliminating the excesses of the rich, or the rich, great. If it doesn't, well, a solution would be still be great, and we could keep working on the rich. Trying to fix all of society's problems at once is of course a recipe for failure. It's similar to people obsessed with racism/colonialism saying that needs to addressed to address global heating - when it doesn't.

Obviously 2C will not lead to the collapse of civilization. Proof: it already has changed that much in the course of human civilization and we're not just here but stronger than ever. Unless the claim is that there is something very special about the starting temperature right now? That's going to take a lot of explaining and strong evidence to convince anyone though. Surely you can do better than vague hand waving "screw over civilization" by describing what that actually means, but once you actually do that, you're realize civilization can easily coexist with those conditions still.

You're missing the point. It's not about insulting her. It's about ineffective tactics and bad optics.

Nope, they really aren't. If we didn't have the retarded green movement for example and instead had pragmatic and intelligent leaders, we could have had a 100% decarbonized electric grid since the 1980s in developed counties with nuclear power but that wouldn't have solved most of the ecological issues I mentioned that are worrying. There go something like 50% of emissions. We could switch to electric cars, buses, etc and knock out another 20%. Emissions down and climate change averted for another 100 years! Now let's all go celebrate by buying some cheap plastic shit from the new local shopping mall.

You're still kind of missing the point. We've largely had this discussion already, but the summary of that is it's not about their individual bad behavior, it's about the optics, hypocrisy, and disingenuous leadership that will sink the credibility of the movement (which will make it unable to tackle climate change and piss you off) and distract and suck up all the political capital away from other ecological issues (which will piss me off).

The public hears about Al Gore's outdoor heated swimming pool or some EU apparatchik preaching about the climate crisis and then taking a 100km jet ride. The public rightly sees the contradiction that these people are in this fight for self enrichment and control. If you want a solution to a social problem, you absolutely need to take these kinds of things into account and individual bad behavior from the leaders of your cause (which seems strangely pervasively) is not a distraction. Furthermore, they're kind of an indicator that the leaders of your cause are shit and don't really even believe in what they're saying; if they did, they wouldn't pull this kind of shit. It's also a great indicator that ultimately they will betray you and your cause. Don't reward those who ask for power and lie to you and tell you what you want to hear. If you get in bed with snakes for a convenient short-term gain, don't be surprised when they bite you.

So yeah, these kinds of grifters are not pragmatic and effective. What they will end up doing is

  1. Grab for more power and personal gain
  2. Not effectively solve climate change
  3. Undermine the credibility of other ecological issues

Condemn them and call our their bullshit when you see it. It will help your goals and mine.
