So if the oil companies are supporting the regulations, we don't need them to be regulations. That's just more overhead and crap for the federal government to deal with. `

From memory, only the big oil companies like the regulations because they are anti-competitive, and they already have the tech in place to comply. Small oil companies and the industry in general would prefer to be able to pollute freely with minimum cost.

That's because red tape, or regulatory rules, often work to benefit larger, long standing companies who have the money and infrastructure to abide by them. They work as a natural barrier to keep new upstarts out of the industry.

Bingo, I applaud the writer for including. This crony capitalism technique spans all industries.
