Meanwhile, 50–100 pounds of materials are mined, moved, and processed for every pound of battery produced.

This really is not discussed enough. Batteries have a horrible environmental impact. Any claim that electric cars are saving the world is just false. The carbon footprint from mining, transporting and refining the batteries just undid any offset from not using gasoline.

I'm far less concerned about the global warming scare than deforestation, disposable and wasteful consumption, overpopulation, wildlife habitat destruction, depletion of aquifers, local air pollution, monoculture crops, heavy metals, depletion of fishing stocks, plastic waste, hormones in drinking water, etc. CO2 is a giant distraction and would be very close to a non-issue if the others weren't happening. Just buy an electric car and you can continue you consumer lifestyle without making any lifestyle changes and save the planet!

We're starting to see political will to "fight global warming" because it will make some companies lots of money and is being seen as "good for the economy", but taking actual measures that would save the environment goes against the business interests of almost all companies and the entire capitalist system.
