Tragedy of the commons: those consumers that shun polluting companies just disadvantage themselves while others use the cheap products regardless.
Unfortunately legislation is needed to coerce us into behaving responsibly as a group. This group of extremely powerful companies has the most to lose from such legislation, and are pouring buckets of money into preventing it by any means necessary so they can continue to profit. Nevermind the costs to human civilization.

This statistic is dishonest at a minimum. People buy things from the companies and that causes the pollution. It's consumption that is responsible.
