They live off the Crown Estate, not taxes. They are given a sovereign grant from the government, but that cash comes out of the Crown Estate, and the rest of the Crown cash gets put into the tax coffers.
That's how I understand it, but I'm no expert.
What I am certain of is that we pay her nothing.
I would agree that they have long since outlived any practical use. But as a historical figurehead, I've got no problems with Elizabeth. But I think the reign should die with her.
The successors lack both purpose and value.

The Queen is still symbolically our queen, not because we forgot to remove her from the books.
It was intentionally left, because we honour her. She always did right by us, and we are proud of our UK heritage.
She has no power though.
