I used to travel a lot but this never happened to me. I don't hear many European stories about this either so I'm guessing it's not really policy in EU.
The risk of bad advertisement like your link, the bad emotions for the victims (I would never fly with that airline again) all for selling 2 or so extra seats......
Air Canada is known to be terrible. Everyone knows they are shitheads. Unfortunately, sometimes they are your only/cheapest option. I'll be honest. I don't travel much. But if I do. I only decide how I'm flying by price. So if that ends up being Air Canada. I'll roll the dice and book with them. Knowing full well I could get fucked over.
I would still be enraged if it happened to me. I would also play ignorant to the fact that its normal practice for them to over book flights. I would just be pissed.
Canadians. Polite till you fuck with us. Then rage and nothing happens.
Explains Trudeau I guess...
Right? If your taking a flight somewhere. You got a god damn schedule. How the fuck they are able to do this shit. I get unreasonably upset about it. Considering I never travel...
